I have discovered a new gold nugget that I absolutely needed to share with you !

<br style=”clear: both;” />At an even about ethical fashion in Paris, organised by MakeSense, I met the young and talented jewellery designer Megan Falconer. She started her own brand not long ago and accepted to answer my questions. 🙂

– When, How and Why did you start making Silverwear?

During my final year of studying Jewellery and Metal Design at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee I was developing my craft in order to design and make a final collection for the end of year exhibition. It was at this stage in my learning where I found a love for the traditional technique of raising, which involves using several hammers and steel forms to manipulate metal from a flat disk to eventually a small cup or bowl. Through this process I also gained an interest in tool making, particularly crafting tools which can become pieces of artwork in themselves, and from this my ideas developed and my final show consisted of a collection of handcrafted tools and the silverware which were made with them.

– What is your main inspiration?

My main inspiration comes from my local surroundings, the landscape in Scotland can change so much within several miles and I use this to inspire different types of tools and textures on metal. I love the idea of creating pieces of silverware that cannot be recreated using conventional tools. Each piece I make is different due to the handcrafted nature of the design.

– How is your brand related to ethical and eco-responsible fashion?

The material I use primarily is sterling silver, and the way I tackle waste within my practice is to recycle the scrap that is created within my making. All scrap or silver dust is collected from my working area and once I have enough I will melt the metal and reuse it – usually to craft a spoon or more sterling silver wire which allows me to make more pieces of work. Eco silver is also used within my practice – which is purchased online however is made from other makers scrap, meaning I use less new sterling silver.

I hope you enjoyed her as much as I did! Check out her contact for more infos:
